East Aurora, NY (October 13, 2023) – Moog Inc. (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B), a worldwide designer, manufacturer, and integrator of precision motion control components and systems, announces its SoftRide isolation system successfully protected NASA’s Psyche spacecraft during launch. The mission lifted off from Kennedy Space Center October 13th.
SoftRide isolation systems are industry-leading technology designed to isolate spacecraft from the harsh launch environment. It played a pivotal role in safeguarding the Psyche spacecraft's sensitive equipment and intricate scientific instruments. In addition to dozens of SoftRide component isolation systems, this launch marks the 51st successful deployment of Moog's whole-spacecraft SoftRide, reinforcing its status as a trusted and indispensable asset for space exploration.
"Our technology is meticulously designed to protect valuable payloads during the most critical phase of space missions, and we are pleased to see it perform flawlessly during the Psyche launch," said Emily Calvanese, Moog Inc. General Manager of Structures and Motion Control. "Our unwavering commitment to reliability and quality is why we have a 100% successful launch history. Our drive for continuous innovation, for both launch and on-orbit environments, enables us to provide advanced solutions that are instrumental in propelling space exploration to new frontiers."
Psyche is NASA’s first mission to explore an asteroid comprised predominantly of metal, rather than rock or ice. The asteroid, also named Psyche, is thought to be the exposed core of a destroyed planet. The mission’s goal is to understand more about the origins of our solar system.
The Psyche spacecraft will travel 2.2 billion miles on its journey to the asteroid, which is in the Kuiper belt between Mars and Jupiter. The spacecraft is set to arrive at the asteroid in July 2029. It will spend two years orbiting the asteroid to take pictures, map the surface, and collect data to determine Psyche’s composition.
